Greenfield Shows Well at Golden City Tournament

The Greenfield Boys and Girls basketball teams completed the Golden City Tournament last week. The Girls held true to their one seed, winning the tournament over Liberal, where the boys proved better than their seed (6) with a third place finish.

The Girls opened play last Monday, January 7th with a convincing win over 8-seed Everton, 56-25. In continuing their winning ways, the Lady Wildcats beat Jasper for the second time this season with a hard fought victory in the semifinals, 45-39. To finish the tournament, the girls played second seed Liberal.

The Lady Wildcats (12-3) came out to a roaring start, leading 20-4 after the first quarter. Strong defense was the name of the game as Liberal was held to only 11 first half points. Sophomore Morgan Wright led the charge with 19 points in the 60-26 victory over the Liberal Lady Bulldogs. Wright and senior Lauren Jones were named to the All Tournament Team.

The Boys' Basketball team entered the tournament as the sixth seed in the tournament and faced Everton in a rematch of the first game of the year. Using a stifling 1-3-1 defense, the Wildcats jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, winning 70-45. The boys played Liberal in the semifinals and lost in a hard fought battle, 51-43.

The Wildcats played Dadeville in the third place game and once again came out with tough defense to build a large early lead. The Wildcats ran away with the game and won 61-31. Junior Daunte Stafford was named to the All Tournament Team.

Both teams have started play in the Stockton Tournament this week. The Girls lost to Miller in the first round, 55-39 and will play host Stockton on Thursday, January 17th at 5:45 pm. The Boys lost to Harrisonville Tuesday, January 15th by a score of 59-50. The Wildcats will play Dadeville Friday, January 18th at 5:45 pm.
