Greenfield Boys Finish Season

Greenfield Boys Basketball season came to end this past Monday, February 18th with a 67-57 loss to Marionville in their Class 2 District Quarterfinal. The Wildcats finished the year with a respectable 13-12 record under first year head coach Matt McCarthy.

The season could be considered one of trial and error, redemption, and growth. Besides having the introduction of a new head coach, the Wildcats were having to replace three starters that included a two-time All State player, an All District guard, and 6'6 post player that doesn't come around very often at school of this size. Even more so, Coach McCarthy and the Wildcats started the year down two players with returning letterman Seth Trask and expected contributor Caden Sims both falling victim to knee injuries during football.

All this led to a 1-4 start and Coach McCarthy looking for a way to right the ship and utilize his team's athleticism and length to promote better results on the floor. His move to a new defense led to better results and a 12-8 finish to the season. They found redemption several times during the season, avenging three early season losses to area rivals Everton, Lockwood, and Miller. The Wildcats took home 3rd Place and Consolation trophies in the Golden City and Stockton Tournaments, respectively. Junior Daunte Stafford took home All Tournament honors during the Golden City Tournament.

The Junior Varsity team was led by Coach Josh Dobson, where he had to figure out a rotation that worked around 15 or so players throughout the season. The Junior Varsity saw growth and promoted development among all the players throughout the season.

As the season came to an end, the Wildcats bid farewell to a total of 10 seniors, four of which were starters. Bailey Baker, Gage Burns, Jonathan Dowler, Jonathan Ellis, Brandon Matthews, Nico Murray, Tyrell Stafford, Seth Trask, Jacob VanKam, and Trenton Wilson all will graduate this spring. Coach McCarthy will return full time junior starter Daunte Stafford and junior lettermen Levi Matthews and Quin Morrow for next season. Junior Sims will return as well, alongside big freshman and sophomore class numbers.

Junior High Boys Coach Kody Mayhew led a young Wildcat squad that grew through many of the challenges that comes with playing a Junior High schedule. Winning two games in the El Dorado Springs tournament, the young Wildcats struggled much of the season. However, it was a year of growth as the team was mostly seventh graders and newcomers playing most Junior High team's 8th graders every night.

Congratulations to the Wildcat Basketball team on a successful season and good luck to our seniors and athletes as the continue on the foundation of excellence set forth at Greenfield Schools.
