Students in Ms. Kemp’s Introduction to Business class have most recently been working in teams to play The Stock Market Game after completing units covering the economy and financial markets. Students have learned the difference between savings and investing and discussed how inflation affects savings. Students have also discussed ways the Fed attempts to regulate the economy including increasing or decreasing interest rates and how these changes affect financial markets. SMG teams begin the game with $100,000 to create a diversified investment portfolio including stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. Throughout the game, students  participate in activities beginning with short-term and long-term goals and matching those goals to investment strategies, various types of assets, the difference in mutual funds, index funds, and ETFs, as well as researching companies in different sectors and comparing their competition to help choose their investments. Students will wrap up their Stock Market Game in a couple of weeks and write a final reflection paper to show what they learned.
